Egg Farmers of Australia CEO Melinda Hashimoto was among the key note speakers at the 2026 Animal Health Australia (AHA) Week in Canberra.

AHA brings together government and agricultural industries to deliver important animal health and biosecurity programs. This includes overseeing the Emergency Animal Health Response Agreement, of which Egg Farmers of Australia is a participant.
Ms Hashimoto (pictured above) joined industry leaders and government representatives to discuss critical issues impacting animal health and biosecurity.
Her participation highlighted the egg industry’s ongoing commitment to strengthening national preparedness and collaboration when it comes to serious animal disease outbreaks.
The CEO delivered a joint presentation with Takuto (Tak) Watanabe, a Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) official, currently based at the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO).
The presentation drew on Ms Hashimoto’s recent Churchill Fellowship research, which explored Japan’s approaches to biosecurity and management of H5 Avian Influenza.
The EFA CEO shared insights she observed in Japan and their relevance to Australia’s evolving biosecurity landscape.
Mr Watanabe (pictured below) complemented this by providing an overview of his work in Australia and his unique perspective as a Japanese official embedded within the local system.
He spoke about the strengths of Australia’s biosecurity framework, particularly its risk-based approach, strong regulatory systems, and close collaboration between industry and government.
Together, their presentation underscored the importance of “international knowledge exchange” and reinforced the value of partnerships in addressing shared biosecurity challenges in an increasingly interconnected world.
