EGG FARMING BODY CELEBRATES 10TH ANNIVERSARY
Egg Farmers of Australia marked a remarkable milestone on June 13 with its 10th anniversary dinner in Sydney.
Bringing together egg farmers, industry leaders, and stakeholders from across Australia, the dinner proved more than just a celebration. It was a powerful reflection on a decade of resilience, innovation and unity within our nation’s egg industry.
This is an industry built on hard work, family farming values, and a shared commitment to feeding our nation one of the most affordable food proteins available.
It was no wonder, that around the room on the night, there was an undeniable sense of pride. It was recognised that over the past decade, Egg Farmers of Australia, has played a critical role in shaping a sustainable and transparent future for our sector.
Many of you would remember the days of the old egg marketing boards that existed in many states. Just over 10 years ago, state egg farming organisations realised a need to establish a national egg farming body to lobby for our industry. As a result, Egg Farmers of Australia was formed.
In the past decade we have grown tremendously and behind the scenes we have made significant advances in:
- developing political relationships
- in strengthening biosecurity legislation to better protect our industry
- been at the forefront of talking with governments for the interests of Australian egg farmers in areas such as animal welfare regulations
- and worked on disease outbreaks and food safety issues impacting on egg production.
In 2026, Egg Farmers of Australia truly is a strong, united force that has earned the respect of politicians, Ag Ministers, poultry science and animal welfare officials, as well as consumers around the country.
Indeed, an annual consumer survey suggests that consumer confidence in the way egg farmers farm and supply their product is overwhelmingly positive.
It is pleasing, that in doing so, Aussie egg farmers maintain the lowest carbon footprint of any animal food protein industry in Australia.
I just wanted to briefly touch on a few more of our achievements in the past decade.
Our future is guided by our new strategic plan. The Egg Farmers of Australia Strategic Plan for 2026–2030 sets out a clear framework to support and advocate for Australian egg farmers, while strengthening the long-term sustainability, resilience, and credibility of our industry.
A strong focus on our work includes the areas of on food safety, biosecurity, animal welfare.
In the political realm, Egg Farmers of Australia has worked hard to strengthen our connection with federal and state governments – which make laws governing agricultural production.
Developing relationships with key Ministers and Opposition MPs is a vital step in getting our voice and issues heard by governments. EFA is regularly involved in government reviews to advocate and raise awareness of the egg industry.
We even host a World Egg Day breakfast in Parliament House in Canberra (in conjunction with the Federal Member for Capricornia) to allow us to engage directly with MPs and Senators from around the country.
In the past 10 years, perhaps one of the biggest tasks EFA undertook on behalf of members, was to engage with governments and animal welfare groups on the significant update of The Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines.
We had some wins and some disappointments – particularly over the government demand to phase out cage egg production in the future. These matters are now in the hands of each state government.
Another large part of EFA’s work in recent times was to contribute to a review into egg production and handling standards by Food Standards Australia and New Zealand.
A further achievement is the past five years has been the development of our GEN EGG Program. This is a networking group for younger generations of egg farming members aged 40 and under, many of whom are increasingly stepping into leadership roles.
Each year, Egg Farmers of Australia also continues to recognise the work of those in the egg industry via our annual Egg Farmers of Australia Industry Recognition Awards.
This includes the:
- Young Achiever of the Year Award
- John Coward Memorial Industry Excellence Award.
During our 10th anniversary dinner in Sydney one message stood out: while the past 10 years have laid a strong foundation, the ambition for the next decade is even greater. With a continued focus on sustainability, transparency, and excellence, Egg Farmers of Australia is well-positioned to lead the industry into a dynamic future.
