Protecting free-range layers when the sheds doors are closed
For a free-range flock the range is the main event. Birds spend the day foraging, scratching, dustbathing and spreading across the paddock. That behaviour is the outlet for a pecking drive that would otherwise turn on other birds. When housing for avian influenza, biosecurity scare, bushfire smoke, flooding, predator pressure or extreme weather forces birds indoors, every protective factor the range provided disappears in a single step. This is housing shock, a behavioural and physiological response to abrupt confinement. Its two biggest risks are injurious feather pecking and smothering.

Why the risk climbs
Injurious feather pecking is redirected foraging behaviour, not aggression. Birds that cannot forage, scratch and dustbathe look for another target, and feathers can become that outlet. At the same time the whole flock is indoors all day, so effective stocking density rises, competition at feeders and drinker’s climb, and subordinate birds have nowhere to escape a persistent pecker. Defra practical management guide (2005) put change itself at the top of the risk list, and confinement bundles several changes into one event. The same fear and crowding also drive piling and smother events, triggered by panic, sudden light changes, resource competition and unfamiliar surroundings.
Keep the litter working
Dry, friable litter is the single most important resource in a confined house and the closest indoor substitute for the range surface. More birds inside for longer means litter caps and goes damp quickly, and capped cold litter drives the frustration that leads to pecking. Rake or rotovate it, top it up with fresh material, keep a depth of at least 5 cm, and use absorbent bedding around drinkers and pop holes where wet patches form.
Replace the foraging outlet
In the AssureWel study of more than 1,500 UK cage-free farms, house enrichment was the only on-farm change significantly associated with reduced feather loss (Mullan et al 2016). Hang pecking blocks, knotted rope and lucerne or straw bales, provide dustbathing boxes, and scatter whole grain and grit across the litter so birds must work for it. Quantity matters most: the more forms of enrichment used together, the lower the chance of an outbreak. Load the house with several rather than leaning on one. Where possible use small, dispersed points in low-traffic zones.
Take the pressure off
With the whole flock inside, reducing competition matters. Provide safe refuges, visual barriers, perches and areas of varied height, and keep movement lanes wide with no dead ends where piling could start. Break up known hot spots such as corners, pop holes and dark patches with mesh panels and low rails but redirect birds rather than cutting usable floor area. Add feeders, drinkers and perches wherever space allows.
Feed, water, light and air
Scattering feed and grit turns feeding into foraging. Check that sodium and the essential amino acids are right with the nutritionist, since low sodium can trigger sharp pecking. Never change the feed abruptly. Aim for even, low light of around 5 to 10 lux in the first hours and avoid beams and shadows; lowering intensity or using coloured bulbs can calm an active outbreak as a short-term holding action only (Huber-Eicher et al 2001). Hold the shed near 20 to 23 degrees with even, draft-free airflow, and monitor dust and humidity as birds spend longer inside (Nicol et al 2013).
Watch the flock and plan the release
Score feather cover on at least 50 birds across the house; head and neck and back and vent (Green et al 2000). Watch for pre-smother behaviour such as birds facing walls, freezing, clustering under perches or repeatedly returning to one corner. Intervene by dimming light, walking birds gently apart and adding barriers. Where housing can be anticipated, phase enrichment in before the doors close and let birds back out gradually. By scoring feather cover for at least two weeks, you can assess if the interventions in place were effective. Any abrupt change in either direction (housing or releasing) carries the same risk.
